Organization & Mission:
Fish & Loaves is a 501(c)3, client-choice, food pantry, “Ensuring No One Goes Hungry” in the communities they serve. It is a faith based, non-sectarian organization staffed by volunteers serving those in need regardless of religious beliefs. Located in a 12,000 square-foot facility, the pantry currently serves residents of seven adjacent communities–Allen Park, Brownstown Township, Dearborn Heights, Romulus, Southgate, Taylor, and Woodhaven.
What’s in a Name?
Fish & Loaves Community Food Pantry was first launched by an ecumenical group of Taylor churches inspired by a miracle story from the gospels—Jesus feeding the multitudes with five barley loaves and two fish. Fish & Loaves’ own founding and growth has been miraculous. Some of the churches involved had their own emergency food pantries and others did not. However, they all united to ensure that families and individuals had access to more comprehensive and long-term food assistance in the face of tough times. The client-choice pantry is currently the largest facility of its kind in the Metro Detroit area and has become a model for other similar community initiatives in Macomb and Wayne Counties. Since its grand opening in 2008, Fish & Loaves has also hosted visitors from thirty different countries interested in learning how Metro Detroiters are responding to the needs created by a rapidly changing economy.
A Client Choice Pantry that Affirms the Dignity of Those in Need
As a client-choice facility, Fish & Loaves allows families and individuals to shop every eight weeks in an attractive setting organized like a grocery store. A wide range of canned goods, refrigerated and frozen foods, dairy products, and seasonal produce are offered at no cost to clients. Our client-choice model affirms the dignity of the families and individuals we serve. Since opening its doors in 2008, the Fish & Loaves Pantry has assisted more than 9100 households and over 13,000 men, women, and children. We distribute over two million pounds of food annually. The advantages of a client-choice pantry are:
- A sense of dignity for clients and their families–thanks to our store-like setting.
- Higher client satisfaction with food they are able to choose.
- Less waste and, therefore, less cost in providing food to clients.
- Greater opportunities for positive and supportive social interaction between Fish & Loaves volunteers and clients.
Fish & Loaves is committed to maintaining a safe, attractive environment for clients and volunteers. In shopping at Fish & Loaves Community Food Pantry, please do not do anything that might impair your own safety. If you need help reaching for any shelved items or transporting groceries to your car, our volunteers are available to assist you. Minor children must be accompanied by their parents at all times, whether inside the pantry outside in the parking lot.
